Ontario REDI Immigration 2026–2027: Six Communities, Eligibility and Next Steps

Ontario’s REDI immigration initiative is returning for 2026–2027, offering dedicated provincial nomination opportunities in six northern and rural communities.

The Regional Economic Development through Immigration initiative operates through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The latest phase runs until December 31, 2027, supporting employers that need international workers to address local labour shortages. ontario.ca

For candidates considering this pathway, understanding the participating regions, eligibility requirements and application process is essential. REDI operates within Ontario’s immigration system; employment in a participating community does not automatically secure nomination or permanent residence.

Which communities participate in Ontario REDI immigration?

The six participating communities for 2026–2027 are:

Community Location
Greater Sudbury / Grand Sudbury Northeastern Ontario
Kenora District Northwestern Ontario
Nipissing District Northeastern Ontario
Rainy River District Northwestern Ontario
Renfrew County Eastern Ontario
Thunder Bay Northwestern Ontario

Applicants should check the designated geographic boundaries on Ontario’s REDI page. Coverage may extend beyond a principal city: Thunder Bay’s development commission identifies its participating area as the Thunder Bay District Census Division. ontario.ca

How does REDI fit into the Workforce Priority Stream?

REDI provides a regional focus within Ontario’s provincial nomination framework. Candidates must still meet the requirements of the applicable immigration pathway.

Ontario’s Workforce Priority Stream includes job-offer pathways covering NOC TEER categories 0–3 and 4–5, alongside a pathway for eligible self-employed physicians.

Most workers will need a qualifying job offer and must satisfy the relevant experience, language, education and professional licensing requirements. Eligible self-employed physicians can qualify for the broader stream without a job offer, subject to its specific conditions. ontario.ca

How many REDI nomination spaces are available?

Local announcements now provide allocation information for two participating districts:

District Published information for 2027
Nipissing District Up to 150 nomination spaces
Thunder Bay District Expected allocation of 150 nominations

North Bay Economic Development reports Nipissing’s allocation. Thunder Bay’s development commission describes its allocation as expected. These announcements update earlier reporting that no community figures had been disclosed; they do not establish identical allocations across all six regions. investinnorthbay.ca

Which foreign workers could benefit?

REDI may be relevant to workers whose qualifications match employers’ recruitment needs in the participating regions.

Candidates should assess more than the location of a job. Their occupation, employment offer, qualifications and work experience must meet the applicable OINP requirements.

Healthcare, construction, manufacturing and other locally needed occupations may offer recruitment opportunities. These examples should not be treated as a confirmed REDI occupation list or a promise of selection.

What changed from the previous REDI pilot?

The previous pilot covered Lanark County, Leeds and Grenville, Sarnia-Lambton and Thunder Bay.

The new phase expands participation from four communities to six. Thunder Bay is the only returning location, with five new partner areas joining the initiative. CIC News

The revised list changes where dedicated regional nomination opportunities are directed. It does not, by itself, explain why each previous partner was omitted.

How to apply through the OINP

There is no separate REDI application. For applications supported by a job offer, the process generally follows these steps:

  1. Check eligibility: Review the relevant Workforce Priority Stream rules and designated community boundaries.
  2. Employer starts the process: The employer submits the job offer through the OINP Employer Portal.
  3. Register an Expression of Interest: The worker registers for consideration.
  4. Apply if invited: The employer and worker submit their respective applications within the applicable deadlines.

An Expression of Interest allows consideration for selection; it does not guarantee an invitation. Follow Ontario’s current application instructions for each submission. investinnorthbay.ca

After provincial nomination, successful candidates pursue permanent residence through the appropriate federal process. Federal eligibility and approval remain separate requirements. canada.ca

What should employers and candidates do next?

Employers should confirm their business and job-offer eligibility before beginning an application. Local economic development teams can help businesses find program information and employer consultations.

Candidates should discuss employer participation early, verify their pathway requirements and prepare supporting documents. Researching housing, transportation and settlement services can also help them assess whether a community fits their long-term plans.
